Webinar: “Splendours of Malay World Textiles” with John Ang, Collector, Scholar, Curator and Dealer, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Virtual via Zoom. Saturday, November 12, 2022: 10 am pt / 1 pm et / 6 pm gmt – London / Sunday, November 13: 2 am Kuala Lumpur. Admission: Free. Registration: https://tinyurl.com/TMAMalayWorldRgrbt The Malay world encompasses a vast swathe of Southeast Asia, from the Malay Peninsula to the coasts of Sumatra, Borneo, and many smaller islands in between. For centuries, textiles have played fundamental roles in the social, economic, and religious life of Malay peoples, but among the various Southeast Asian textile traditions, those of the Malay peoples have received relatively little attention from scholars and collectors. Based upon the recent spectacular exhibition of his textiles and costumes in Kuala Lumpur, collector and scholar John Ang will showcase the beauty, diversity, and complexities of Malay textiles. He will cover weaving and dying traditions, discussing cultural, artistic and trade exchanges and influences from the greater South Asian and Pacific Asian region, by categorizing the entire genre, including songket (brocade), limar (weft ikat), telepuk (gold leaf application), tekatan (embroidery), pelang (tie-dye), ikat loseng (warp ikat) and more. Born in Chicago to Singapore parents, John Ang grew up in Singapore, but later completed his b.a. and m.a. in Asian Art History at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After working as an intern at the Detroit Institute of Arts (Dia), he moved to Japan and worked as an art journalist for the Japan Times. Later, he established an Asian art and antique gallery in Taipei, Taiwan. John has written numerous articles on Asian art for international magazines, and has also given many presentations in Asia and the West. After 31 years, he moved to Malaysia to concentrate on building his collection of Malay textiles and complete his book about them. He now has nearly 5,000 pieces of Malay textiles, and is currently exhibiting 700 of them in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
