Back
a highly decorative and very rare Indian Tiger painting. Gilt and oil pigments on cotton cloth. 150cm x 106cm (59 x 42 inches)
The painting is part of a tradition going back to the 18th century (up to the early 20th) of the Mewari nobility having life size or near life size trophy paintings made of tigers they had hunted. From Rajasthan and dating to around 1900/1910, the gilt pigment and anthropomorphic features on this example are typical of the period. For a similar example, see Lot 150 Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art 11th June 2020 (https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/26016/lot/150/)
Condition is overall excellent, with signs of age/discolouration to the khaki ground but otherwise no issues. The black of the tiger stripes has a uniform wear giving a lovely texture where the gold comes through from underneath. We have had the painting backed with a new cotton backing cloth in a gorgeous dusky pink that compliments the gold of the tiger and the vermillion border of the painting. The backing cloth has an invisible pole sleeve attached for hanging.
