Central Asian Embroidered Felt Bag, Wool, Animal Hair, 20th Century, Bag alone is 22.5 x 11, with tassels and attachments it is 48" long. One morning many years ago when i was buying on the street in Kabul, i got caught in a heavy rainstorm. i took shelter in the entrance way of a unused shop with a couple of Uzbek textiles runners. These were part time dealers who would show up maybe two or three times a year from the north with a few bundles of rugs and embroideries to sell. i had bought from them in the past but they were never very forthcoming about where anything they had came from. Maybe they thought i was trying to steal their sources? Anyway, having nothing better to do than to smoke my bedis and wait for the rain to stop, they got real chatty. One thing i remember is that they pulled out a bag just like this and said: "Everyone says these are Uzbek but they are really Arab." (The way they told me was like it was a big secret.) They were pretty connected guys who bought from the villages so they may be right. Never heard that from anyone else though. In my opinion they certainly aren't tent pole covers, in spite of their "utt kapp" name.
