17th c Hindu Shaivite icon of 'Virabhadra', the fierce and frightening aspect of Lord Shiva by which He punished those who disrespected Him; brass; 6"h x 3.5"w or 15cm x 9cm. Note the lovely patina and softened surface resulting from centuries of ritual touch and cleansing. Note: the god's blurred features can be seen as a reminder that one's ego/facial identification is ephemeral. Acquired in old Benares(Varanasi) late last century.
