Miao Textile: One of kind, single, supplementary weft embroidered panel, l: 4.63m/14.2ft and w: 36.5cm/13.8in, from Guizhou, Southwest China. Its function is a bit of mystery so it being a sling wrap around baby carrier or possibly a festival or religious banner. Originally i thought it might be a traditional wedding blanket that would be cut and sewn with three panels together but there is no border pattern woven into this piece as is typical. The pattern is quite unusual in that green is the dominant color whereas shades of yellows, blues and red colors are the ones most favored by people from this region. The embroidery threads are all handspun cotton and the foundation is made of a loosely woven stiff black bast fiber, a kind of which i have never seen before (any opinions are welcome). i suspect this came from a very remote region where silk and cotton are hard to come by commodities. Circa early 20th century. http://www.trocadero.com/stores/abhayaasianart/items/1413066/item1413066...
