Lecture & reception: Saturday, April 28, 2019 Ucla Fowler Museum, Los Angeles: "Dressed With Distinction: Syrian Garments for Men and Women" with Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood, Director, the Textile Research Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands, co-sponsored by Textile Museum Associates of Southern California, Inc. At the end of the 19th century and into the early 20th century, Syrian culture was very diverse in terms of artistic achievement and material culture, and garments worn by wealthier Syrian men and women reflected their rich cosmopolitan lifestyle. The exhibition "Dressed with Distinction: Garments from Ottoman Syria" explores the region’s textile production during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Syria was an international hub for the trade and production of handwoven cloth. With a focus on the social and seasonal contexts in which garments were worn by men, women, and children, the exhibition’s presentation of these distinguished textiles enables audiences to engage with Syrian culture and weaving techniques from a bygone era. Dr. Vogelsang-Eastwood’s talk explores economic, political, religious, and social impacts on clothing with an eye to the Fowler Museum’s current installation of garments from the David and Elizabeth Reisbord Collection. a book signing and reception in the Davis Courtyard will follow.
