a rare “Kazak-type” rug with an east Caucasian field design. The field color, neither green nor blue and hard to capture in a photo is unusual and appealing. The powerful, reciprocal border is an effective counterpoint to the relative calmness of the field design of tiny palmettes. Difficult to date, i would place it in the second half of the 19th century, most likely 3rd quarter. Condition issues are obvious. One of the details includes a close-up of a small bit of outlining in black i had done to make several palmettes read a bit stronger. The rug has a beauty to it that persists over time. (i know, as I’ve lived with it for a while now). It is a fairly large piece measuring 195x120 cms.
