a classic Neirez Afshar mat. There are many examples of Afshar "sitting rugs" but they are usually 3-3 1/2 feet square. This mat is only 2' square. so its function is a bit of a mystery. The typical long kilims at both ends precludes its being a bag face. a beautiful example on a white ground with excellent colors.
