Woman's Jelak. Samarkand region, Uzbekistan. Silk atlas; silk cross stitch hand-embroidery; black machine-embroidery; metal spangles; pearl, glass, & plastic buttons; tiny glass beads. Hand-braided trim on false sleeves. Lined with printed cotton. Excellent condition. 32.5" length - shoulder to hem (not including false sleeves). Very short cape-like jelaks like this were popular in rural areas near Samarkand around the 1960s. Like their longer jelak cousins they were worn by Tajik women as headdresses.
