Detail - Baluch Bag (1/2 of a small "khorjin"/donkey bag), w. Afghanistan, 19th Century, 17" x 13.5"

A very colorful Baluch bag from w. Afghanistan, approx 1/2 of a khorjin (donkey bag), the design is a charmingly naive rendition of the so-called 'memlinc gol' pattern.

The loose drawing, colorful palette with a glistening wool are immediately striking. The formality of some Baluch weavings from ne Persia is totally absent, suggesting it may actually be an 'authentic' example of folk art as it is doubtful such a weaving was 'made for market', as many were.

Devoid of marketplace demands, the bag provides a clear view of the past with this clearly 'tribal', even possibly nomadic, weaving.

The condition is excellent, no holes, no damage, no repair. The colors are scintillating, very saturated, all derived from natural dyes.
