antique large Caucasian rug with a powerful design. Appears caucasian although certainly not karachopf type as the structure with brown wefting and goat hair selvages are not typical kazak. Neither is the overall color palette. There are karachopf kazaks with a remarkably similiar empty or nearly empty central reserve but they are structurally quite different. i have seen and personally inspected 3 others rugs of this unusual group and they are all very close in design, color and stucture, although varying greatly in size, some being very large, especially in length. None have, in my opinion, been identified correctly. Perhaps more karrabaugh in origin? Or more likely a weaving from a as yet unidentified village? This example is in reasonably good condition with recent wash and restoration. Pile varies from good medium length to some areas of normal wear and lower pile as shown. No holes, tears or damage. All natural colors with a very harmonious palette. An eye catching addition to any home. Good age, ca. 1875. 4'8" x 7'5"
