is it from central Anatolia (Taspinar?) or even Cappadocia? The jury is still out as no directly comparable examples have yet come to light!

Acquired between 1909 and 1920 in Turkey by an East German family in the paint manufacturing business. One of a collection of kilims recently acquired from the family most of which were used until 1940 in their two halves as inner curtains in a large country house in Magdeburg, where they were treated against moths and still have labels sewn on. i have an advert dated 1922 by the company Albert Karutz which went out of business before the second world war. The kilims were then stored away from the 1950s until last year and consequently are all in exceptional condition, having had little exposure to direct daylight and they retain their vibrant colours.

From about the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, with a bold design and excellent colours from natural dyes, this kilim was woven in two panels of 3/5ths and 2/5ths width. It has had minor professional repairs made using antique wool to a small section of the top end border and to fraying on the inner selvage edge of the left, wider panel. The skillful repairs are invisible and one needs to look closely to see the division between the two panels to see where they are joined. Photos of the kilim before repair are also available on request. Size 338cm x 150cm.
