Futon cover (futonji), fragment, San-in region, western Honshu, Japan. Cotton; weft ikat. Early 19th to mid 20th century. 13" (33 m) wide by 58" (147.3 cm) long. See the same pattern at the Fowler Museum's website: http://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/thirty-japanese-cloths-from-a-217940. The design motif for this kasuri ikat is a turtle and a mythical jewel. The condition of this piece is excellent, with one small area of broken threads, barely visible. Ex Fifi White, Berkeley, California.
