Katazome strip, Japan. Hand loomed cotton, indigo and madder. 66" long (167 cm) by 13.5" (34.2 cm) wide. Late 19th to early 20th century. Ex Fifi White, Berkeley, California. Katazome refers to the resist dye technique using rice paste and bran squeezed through a stencil (katagami) to produce beautiful repeat patterns. This is a graceful composition of flowers and karakusa arabesques and was likely part of an old futon cover. i have two of these panels, both in excellent condition with no holes or spots.
