Kawa ponchito (small poncho), Aymara culture, Southern Altiplano region, Bolivia. Camelid wool yarns (alpaca, llama and vicuna), natural dyes. Late 18th century or before. 47" (119.4 cm) high by 37" (94 cm) wide. Three small restored holes, professionally mounted. The weaving of this piece is unique to the Aymara people because of their use of chimi, which are two-ply, bi-chrome yarns, here, one cochineal and one brown, twisted and used as one warp thread. The result is a luminous blend of color that would be impossible to achieve any other way.
