This is a boro sashiko sodenashi, a type of sleeveless hanten, or jacket, typically worn by Japanese farmers. The outer fabrics are comprised of solid indigo cotton. a kasuri yoke and lapel were added at a later date around the collar and the shoulders to further reinforce the garment. Upon closer inspection, the vest has a remarkable dense and dizzying array of sashiko embroidery in a repeating step pattern. The dense running stitch is used to reinforce the garment and layer together the pieces of cloth. Wonderful texture and pattern!
