Primitive looking early 19th century Spanish Alpujarran rug (Granada, Spain). Alpujarran rugs were domestic items generally woven for personal use, a tradition that remained in Southern Spain (the muslims stayed for 700 years i n Spain). Woven in three parts, retaining some of the original fringes on four sides. Linen ground with looped design in wool. It was common to leave the linen exposed as part of the design as is the case with the present rug (cream areas). The design could be pomegranates, the symbol of Granada. Worn, with quite a few holes. Of great ethnographic value as there are not many of this age that survived to our days. 214x180cms More info on Alpujarran rugs in http://primitiverug.com/alpujarra-rugs/
