moroccan berber man's cape with hood Many types of cape, or jellaha, are worn by men throughout Morocco. This is an example known as "al bornoz" and is used by shepherds to combat the intense cold of the Atlas Mountain ranges. It is hand woven with undyed hand spun wool, is virtually wind proof and exceptionally heavy. It dates from around the 1930's and is from the Berber Beni M'guild group in the central Middle Atlas. It is a fascinating woven record of an aspect Berber life. It is in excellent condition and the original hand made fastening loops are intact. There is good information and illustrations of shepherds' capes in "Splendeurs du Maroc" on pages 194-197. Reference 2603. Size 180 x 112cms. 6ft. x 3ft.8in. fully opened. Euros 545. sold thankyou
