Lot #192, Khotan saf,
9ft. x 3ft. 7in. (275 x 110 cm),
East Turkestan circa 1800,
Condition: good, some areas of wear, six inch repair in lower minor border, original end finish and selvedges. Wool warp, wool weft, wool pile.
Most East Turkestan saf have seven or nine mirhab, ones with five are unusual. This Khotan saf is not a fragment, it is original and its small size highly desirable. It has pale but still dynamic colouration and well-thought out and executed drawing of the plants in each niche creates a picture that is both highly decorative and intriguing. Estimate: €8,000 - 12,000, Auction: March 15th 2014, Vienna, Austria http://www.liveauctioneers.com/catalog/50683_fine-oriental-rugs-ii/page1
