a fragmentary North-West Persian carpet, the surviving sections of what must have been an impressive pair of large pattern herati carpets. Although in a reworked state, this carpet still retains great presence through the artistry of its weavers. The field design, with emphasis on the repeating rosettes is perhaps a glimpse of the original inspiration for the mina khani of Veramin. In addition it evokes the classic palmette and rosette patterns of 18th/19th.century Kurdistan. The border design would suggests Bakshaish but i am cautious of that attribution owing the carpet's long pile. All-in-all a fascinating piece which i am sure will prompt debate for some time to come, mid 19th.century or earlier (see images 4 and 5 for detail of cuts), 305 x 180cm.
