Antique Heriz 100% wool carpet, pre 1900.Beautiful natural colours:deep red,coral,indigo blue,cerulean blue against an inky midnight ground. Medallion centre. There are a few condition issues.Loss of fringe and a slight amount of unraveling at the ends.Completely reparable given the pile is not worn except in a narrow band seen as lighter area in photo.The binding has a small area that needs attention-please see photos.Interior shots do not do it justice.To better show off the depth of rich colour and exquisite design,I have taken a few exterior photos as well. There are no repairs,no moth damage,staining or odour.It has been in storage since we inherited this carpet from my late father-in-law's estate.The rug likely could use a cleaning but is soft and pliable. Measures 193 cm. in length and 125.5 cm. wide (49.5" x 76").Apparently this is an unusual size,but very versatile for placement in many areas of your home. Such rugs are produced in the village of the same name on the slopes of Mount Sabalan. Heriz carpets are extremely durable and hard-wearing and they can last for generations. 19th century examples of such carpets are often found for sale in major auction houses in United States and Europe. Such rugs age well and become more and more beautiful with age. Part of the reason for the toughness of Heriz carpets is that Mount Sabalan sits on a major deposit of copper. Traces of copper in the drinking water of sheep produces high quality wool that is far more resilient than wool from other areas. Heriz rug weavers often make them in geometric, bold patterns with a large medallion dominating the field. Such designs are traditional and often woven from memory.
