A rare Japanese silk applique kesa (Buddhist priest's robe); c. 1800; approx. 2.10x5.10 feet. The kesa consists of a 21-jo pattern of fine silk strips attached to the brocaded silk ground. The number of strips signifies a high rank in the Soto sect of Zan Buddhism. Fine condition, slight fading. Lined with original fine beige silk, light fraying.
