Jajims of the Shahsavan

An Exhibition by Seref Ozen, Cocoon

Jajims, strip-woven flat-weaves, have been used as, blankets, bedding, wraps and general utility textiles for centuries in the Near East and Central Asia. Indeed, various striped textiles illustrated in Persian court miniature paintings from as early as the fourteenth century may very well be depictions of these multifaceted cloths. Woven in colorful bands of wool and silk their design is simple, elegant and timeless.


Among the exquisite array of textile objects woven by the Shahsevan confederation of tribes, nomads first mobilized in the northwestern border areas of what was then the Safavid Persian empire in ca. 1600, jajims have been prized as luxury domestic objects in Iran for generations. The collection of Shahsevan jajims presented here by Seref Ozen of Cocoon date mainly from various points in the nineteenth century. This exhibition is a tribute to the growing international popularity of these versatile and beautiful textiles.
