Hello again, and welcome back to my page. Offered here is an early and incredibly beautiful Karakalpak carpet, from the now autonomous region of Karakalpakstan in Central Asia. From its bold, archaic design and mind-boggling colours i would date it to circa 1820. Not very often one has the opportunity to witness a such a striking arrangement of three-gul rows allover such a large field. Other examples with two-gul rows don't display such a spectacular colour palette, and are considered of a later date. The condition is very good for its age, with both kilim ends largely intact. There are some old rewoven and repiled areas in the field, and the selvedges are largely left intact. It shows low to medium pile allover, with small areas of slightly heavier wear. Very respectable for its age, i would say. The weft seems to be made of undyed camel hair, but I'm not 100% certain. It measures 13' 2" x 6' 7" ( 400 x 200 cm)approximately. It is a rare and stunning carpet for the connoisseur. I've just added new, close up photos of some interesting details and of the back.
