This is an antique boro sodenashi, or sleeveless vest. The intricately patched inside of this vest is what makes this piece truly unique. The inside back is made of a composite of beautiful indigo dyed cottons sashiko stitched together. One can see years of hard wear in this garment and the resulting indigo patchwork is unconsciously artful: layers of patches and mended areas create a landscape of rough hewn geometric shapes. The vest is in excellent boro condition, save for one coin sized hole in the front and one in the back. a fantastic boro garment, truly reminiscent of old Japan.
